The cosy county of Kent, is not only famous for its picturesque landscapes or historic buildings, but also for its diverse wildlife. From rare birds to unusual rodents, Kent offers a plethora of opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts to observe and appreciate.
One of the most iconic wildlife species found in Kent is the red kite. These majestic birds of prey, with their distinctive reddish-brown bodies and forked tails, can often be seen soaring high in the skies over the Kent countryside. The best places to spot red kites in Kent include Bough Beech Reservoir, Dungeness RSPB Reserve, and Hucking Estate.

If you're a fan of birdwatching, Kent is also home to a wide variety of other bird species, including marsh harriers, little egrets, and avocets. The RSPB reserves at Dungeness, Cliffe Pools, and Northward Hill are all fantastic places to go birdwatching and see these beautiful creatures in their natural habitats.
For those more interested in mammals, Kent is home to some rare species, such as the water vole and the hazel dormouse. The best places to see these creatures are in the wetlands and woodlands of Kent, including places like Stodmarsh National Nature Reserve, Blean Woods, and Wye National Nature Reserve.

If you're lucky, you might even spot a European otter in one of Kent's rivers or streams. These playful creatures are notoriously difficult to spot, but can sometimes be seen in the River Stour or the River Medway.

In addition to birds and mammals, Kent is also home to a wide variety of insects, some of our favourites being the butterflies and dragonflies. The chalk grasslands of the North Downs are home to rare butterflies such as the adonis blue and the chalk hill blue, while the salt marshes of the North Kent coast are a haven for dragonflies and damselflies.

Whether you're a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or just keen to switch off from everyday life and connect with nature, Kent offers a wealth of opportunities to observe and appreciate the natural world. So pack your binoculars and camera, and head out to one of Kent's many wildlife hotspots to see some of the creatures Kent has to offer.
