In the colder months, rainy and wet weather is somewhat of a certainty in the UK. However the extreme conditions (storms, hail, even snow!) we’ve been experiencing, has been causing a lot of damage to roofs. And while you may not think of repairing your damaged roof as a matter of urgency, we’re here to tell you why it is super important to have a secure, damage-free roof! Below we’ve listed all the problems that can come with damaged roofs and the risks they can pose.
With extreme wet weather and a damaged roof, the most obvious problem you are likely to encounter is water leakages through your roof. As well as soggy walls, furniture and floors, there are more serious complications these leakages can have. The first being potential fire hazards.
Potential fire hazards
Now this may not be an obvious one and you may be thinking - how can a water leak cause a potential fire? As well as the damage water will cause to the interiors of your home, if water leaks come into contact with any electrical systems it could be fatal. Now we all know water and electricity don’t mix - and when water leaks combine with electrical systems, this could cause sparks, shocks or shorts that could potentially end up in a domestic fire.
A damaged roof can produce water leakages, and water leakages are extremely likely to lead to mold. Damaged roofs combined with wet rainy weather, create the perfect conditions for mold to gradually grow in your home, and once there is significant amounts of mold, it can be really tricky and expensive to try and remove it. Once there is mold growing in one part of your home mold can spread through your house via the HVAC system. Although mold and damp will cause inevitable damage to your walls and furniture, mold can also have detrimental effects on your health. If you have allergies, asthma or weak immune system, the emergence of mold is likely to make you ill.
What may start off as a small water leak can cause serious problems to the structure of your home. The water leaks can leak down to your foundation levels and cause compromised roof structure, posing a safety hazard. Structural damage will pose risks of collapse and also be very costly if left unrepaired for a long stretch of time.
